Franziska Reinbothe
Works

Biography
In her painting practice, the artist is drawn to what usually remains hidden: the back of a picture and its edges. To reveal these elements, she compresses canvases, exposes stretcher frames, or dispenses with them entirely. After the painting process is complete, she stretches, folds, breaks, cuts through, and/or sews up her works. Some of the pieces protrude far into the room, while others have completely detached from the wall.
She does not work based on specific projects but continuously engages in an ongoing process. She trusts in the act of making rather than making decisions that would restrict her in advance. She often asks herself, “What happens if I break the strips of the painting? And what if I subsequently repair them? How will the picture change if I use transparent chiffon fabric instead of paint?” Regardless of the strategies she has used
or will use, her work always revolves around contemporary painting, its means, and its possibilities.
