Biography
Jerico Cabrera Carandang (Philippines - Rosario, 1992) moved to Italy in 2002.
He began his interest in visual arts in Rome by practising graffiti art. He later attended the Liceo artistico ‘Caravaggio’ in Rome, graduating in 2012. Through these studies he developed his interest in contemporary painting. He continued his studies on painting independently and pursues his practice in the urban environment through wall paintings.
Between 2014 and 2021, he took part in major urban interventions for various Italian cities. Since 2021, he has co-founded the independent space ‘Porto Simpatica’.
His work is a quest for novel perspectives and dreamlike landscapes. It begins with an examination of objects, fragments of images, or natural elements, which, through a process of deconstruction, are redefined and transformed into disorienting and ambiguous spaces. With a focus on contrasts, opposites, and their confrontation, he delves into the materiality and formation process of each element. He strives to inscribe a space defined by light and shadow within the painting, driven by a desire to liberate the mind and hand from the constraints of figuration. His artistic language oscillates between abstraction and representation. The artist aims to challenge the boundaries of perception and the sensory data that shapes our psyche. Through a process characterized by uncertainty, the pictorial process remains undefined and mutable, allowing for the discovery and visualization of forms and places through imagination and memory.
